Special Weather Statement issued January 14 at 1:22PM EST by NWS Morristown TN

Summary: A cold front will move across east Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North Carolina late this afternoon and evening bringing with it widespread precipitation and colder temperatures. A band of rain will move into the region then mix with and change over to snow showers during the evening. A brief period of accumulating snow is possible tonight before the main precipitation band exits across the Plateau and southwest Virginia, as well as portions of the northern and central valley in east Tennessee. In addition, a few snow showers and flurries will linger across these areas into Thursday morning. Snowfall of a dusting to 1/2 inch will be possible in some areas, with up to 1 inch across the highest ridge tops. Lingering moisture on roadways may also freeze in some spots later tonight, with patches of ice possible. Slick road conditions will be possible across portions of the area this evening into early Thursday. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further details or updates.

For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 12 below expected. * WHERE...In North Carolina, Ashe and Watauga Counties. In Virginia, Grayson County. * WHEN...For the Wind Advisory, from 9 PM this evening to 11 AM EST Thursday. For the Cold Weather Advisory, from midnight tonight to 7 AM EST Friday. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

Winds gusting as high as 35 mph at times, especially over the higher elevations. * WHERE...Russell and Wise Counties. * WHEN...Until 11 AM EST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute.

A band of rain will move into the region then mix with and change over to snow during the evening. A brief period of accumulating snow is possible across the Plateau, southwest Virginia, northeast Tennessee, and central valley. Snowfall of a dusting to 1/2 inch is possible mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces, and up to 1 inch across the higher ridges. Summary: Snow showers are expected this evening and into Thursday at times, with up three inches possible across the higher elevations. Heavier snow showers could produce sudden visibility reductions. Additionally, gusty winds of 25 to 35 mph are possible, especially across the higher ridges. Those traveling this evening and overnight should be prepared for reduced visiblity and slick surfaces, especially across the higher terrain. Please allow for extra time to reach your destination.
