Pioneering Art Ceramics in Flanders 1935-1970

*Documents ceramics in Belgium, a previously neglected fieldAround 1920, ceramists in Flanders were beginning to experiment with modern forms and new glazes. Unlike neighboring countries, Belgium did not have a ceramics industry and thus, did not have a tradition of art ceramics. This book traces the development of ceramic art in Flanders leading up to the international recognition they earned for their designs.Pioneering Belgian ceramists included the artists Joost Marechal and Jan Cockx. Roger Vandeweghe, a pupil of Marechal's, co-founded a workshop with his brother Laurent in 1947. Later the brothers went their separate ways; their workshops, Perignem and Amphora, are among the most important in Flanders. The color photographs document the contribution to ceramics by artists in Belgium and it is exciting to see the high quality and superlative craftsmanship that had been attained by the 1950s and 1960s.
