Story Behind the Art:
This is a Fair Trade product, handcrafted by artisans in India. These cushions are hand-woven on small weaving units called pit looms. These are traditional looms actually built into pits so the artisans can work them using their feet. The pattern is woven into the fabric by carefully hand-knotting different threads. This art is locally known as 'Kaashida,' from the Persian word 'to weave'.
These are made in Northwest India, in the desert region of India and Pakistan. Formerly considered part of the untouchable caste, this group of weavers now earns respect for their art and brings economic opportunities to the region through these products. Fair Trade practices ensure, fair wages, no child labor, equal rights for women, preservation of traditional arts and development opportunities for these underprivileged artisans.

Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (County) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the village's children are able to stay in school.

During the 1970s, Isidoro C'cahuantico was forced to migrate when terrorist activities swept his region. Accepting various jobs, he soon found himself working as a janitor in a textile factory. 'I was completely fascinated with the work they were doing. I became enamored with the textile arts at first sight.' At night, I began to look at the looms and machines and experiment with them. Some days later, one of the weavers complained his machine was never the way he'd left it, and the owner was surprised to learn the culprit was me! When she asked why I was using the loom, I replied that I wanted to learn. She said I could assemble one of the spare looms in the warehouse. That was one of the most important and memorable moments in my life, the beginning of my vocation, which I later passed to my children.'

The Story Behind the Art
'My name is Liem Hauw and I was born on August 31, 1969 in Java. I started to work in 1995 after graduating from the university. I worked at some residential projects and hotels. I began by opening an art workshop in Bali. I work with textiles made from natural materials such as fragrant root, sea grass, water hyacinth, and many others. Maybe God had planned this way of life for me. My works became recognized and I started to make, on my own: curtains, blinds, floor mats, mosquito nets, cushions, table runners, etc. Now I also produce frames, vases, baskets, and lamps by weaving banana bark, sea grass, and other materials. I also work with metal.
'My team includes my wife and a few more people from my neighborhood. Our products have been recognized in the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, and South Africa.'

The Story Behind The Product
Chucam is a small farming village located in the Department (County) of El Quiche, Guatemala. The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a better life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make beautiful patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the villages children are able to stay in school.

Story Behind the Art:
During the 1970s, Isidoro C'cahuantico was forced to migrate when terrorist activities swept his region. He found work as a janitor in a textile factory. 'I was completely fascinated with the work they were doing,' Isidoro recalls. 'I became enamored with the textile arts at first sight. At night, when everyone had gone home, I began to look at the looms and to experiment with them. Some days later, one of the weavers complained his machine was never the way he'd left it the night before. The owner asked who kept adjusting the loom, and was surprised to learn the culprit was me! When she asked why I was using the loom, I replied that I wanted to learn. She said if I really wanted to learn, I should learn to assemble one of the spare looms in the warehouse. That was one of the most important moments in my life. It was the beginning of a vocation, a great gift that I have now also passed to my children.'

Machilipatnam is known for its Kalamkari textiles and paintings created using vegetable dyes. As a kalam (pen) is used in the technique of painting, it was called "Kalamkari Painting". During the 17th century, western traders were attracted by this art.

These duvets are block printed in Bagru, which is a small down near Jaipur, in Rajastan within Western India. Rajastan is well known for it's block printing cottage industry. The village of Bagru is primarily a block printing village; printing is the primary industry there. Blocks are hand-carved by one lot of craftsmen and printing is done by another. The purchase of these items helps support this artisan community and gives them the resources necessary for a brighter future.
