Baluch rugs are tribal hand-woven rugs made in the southern part of Iran by nomadic Baluch tribes. The majority of Baluch rugs are woven in the province Sistan-Baluchistan, which sits on the extreme Southeast boundaries of Iran. A lot of Baluch rugs also come out of Iran's vast province of Khorassan which is just to the north. Colors of Baluch rugs are usually predominantly a rich burgundy with some very dark navy blue and accents of ivory. They frequently have either an overall pattern, or a prayer rug design. For centuries, Tibetans have been weaving and using carpets as bedding, saddle blankets and meditation mats in monasteries. As a means to making a living in a new land, these hardy Tibetan refugees received the support of the Swiss government and began a cottage industry of carpet weaving. Tibetan weaving is very much a separate category distinctively different than the main body of oriental rugs. To construct a hand-tufted rug, a cotton canvas is stretched on a frame to form the foundation of the rug. The design is drawn on the canvas in stencil or in outline form. Using a hooking tool, pile yarns are pushed through the foundation, making a loop, which is then cut giving the finished rug a plush or cut pile surface. Instead of the typical hand tied knots they loop the pile ply around the structure and a rod and then they cut the pile to release the rod.

Story Behind the Art:
The town of Heriz (pronounced Harees) is known as one of the most significant historical places in the Azerbaijan. Typically, Heriz rugs are hand-woven by Turkish Azerbaijanis. The inspiration came from the highly religious landmarks in the region. The most famous design consists of a very large diamond medallion or a star-like floral medallion with eight petals, and corners very similar to the centerpiece medallion. Corners are sometimes square or rectangular. The pattern is almost always geometric. Usually the background is very crowded. Today, the Heriz style is copied by India, Pakistan, China and Romania.

Story Behind the Art:
This Kilim design originates from Mimana, an area suspected to have been settled in Paleolithic times due to the numerous cave dwellings discovered there. For ages this remote area has been a trading center, significantly contributing to the business of the great silk routes. Kilims are known as 'pileless' rugs and the design is also known as 'slitweave.' These beautiful designs are achieved by interweaving the various colors of the vertical and horizontal strands of the rug. It can be used as a hanging piece or as a floor covering. Master Worldstock weavers in India have managed to replicate this pattern, using the same traditional techniques as their Iranian counterparts.

'Hola! I'm from a town in Oaxaca, Mexico dedicated to weaving. I am the fourth generation of my family to practice this craft. We spin and dye wool using dyes from bugs, rocks and flowers. We immerse the hanks of yarn for half an hour and then dry them. We use reed bobbins, and we wind the yarn on them, warp the handloom, and weave the rug.'
