Thom Yorke - The Eraser (Parental Advisory)
Thom Yorke - The Eraser (Parental Advisory)
Your Price:$9.20
Description: Personnel: Thom Yorke; Jonny Greenwood (piano); Nigel Godrich.Audio Mixer: Nigel Godrich.Arrangers: Thom Yorke; Nigel Godrich. In 2006, with little advance word, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke unveiled his first solo album, THE ERASER, much to the surprise of many of the band's fans. Given that Yorke is the literal voice of the beloved British rock ensemble, these nine songs, produced by Nigel Godrich, don't depart too much from Radiohead's moody, electronica-tinged sound (i.e. KID A, AMNESIAC, HAIL TO THE THIEF), but they do prove to be more intimate, sometimes recalling the hauntingly spare "Rabbit in Your Headlights," Yorke's collaboration with DJ Shadow on U.N.K.L.E.'s PSYENCE FICTION. Like that tune, much of THE ERASER is awash in somber piano lines and minimal beats, as on the dreamy opening title track, while "The Clock" runs on skittering, tightly wound loops. Though there are up-tempo moments on the record, the overall atmosphere is melancholy and sometimes flat-out ominous, qualities that are hand-in-glove with Yorke's achingly plaintive voice and often bleak lyrics. Enhanced by the beautifully illustrated artwork of Stanley Donwood, THE ERASER isn't just music for a rainy day, it's the perfect counterpoint to a thunderstorm.

Spin Doctors - Pocket Full of Kryptonite
Your Price:$7.54
Description: Spin Doctors: Christopher Barron (vocals); Eric Schinkman (piano, guitar, background vocals); Aaron Comess (keyboards, drums, percussion, background vocals); Mark White (bass).Additional personnel: John Popper (harmonica, background vocals); John Bush (congas, tambourine).Producers include: Spin Doctors, Peter Denenberg, Frankie LaRocka.Recorded at the Power Station & RPM Studios, New York; Acme Recording Studios, Mamaroneck, New York in August & December 1990.The Steve Miller Band of the 90s has made a small impression with this irresistible package. Crammed full of great riffs and licks, tight playing and singing with enthusiasm. The title track together with the wry 'Little Miss Can't Be Wrong' were both hit singles in the wake of the excellent 'Two Princes', one of the few occasions where the cliche of rhyming 'baby' with 'maybe' was completely acceptable. Unpretentious rock music for the 90s and a memorable debut, that they could never come near again.

Skillet - Collide
Skillet - Collide
Your Price:$9.11
Description: Skillet: John Cooper (vocals, bass); Ben Kasica (acoustic guitar); Korey Cooper (piano, keyboards, programming, samples); Lori Peters (drums).Skillet: John Cooper (vocals, bass guitar); Ben Kasica (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Korey Cooper (piano, keyboards, drum programming, sampler, background vocals); Lori Peters (drums, background vocals).Like contemporaries P.O.D. and Pillar, Skillet plays a bone-shaking, completely uncompromising brand of nu-metal that upon first glance offers very little indication of the group's evangelical Christian beliefs. Musically, the band plows some of the same ground as melodic neo-grunge groups such as Nickelback and Trapt, yet adds a conviction, raw energy, and experimental edge that takes its cue from earlier, more progressive bands such as Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, and Tool. Lead vocalist/bassist John Cooper's lyrics, though clearly faith-based, ironically represent some of the most chillingly direct and angst-driven songwriting this side of Nirvana. Backed by a mix of highly rhythmic de-tuned guitars, speed metal-style drum fills, and a plethora of spooky industrial-style samples, Cooper drives home his inspirational message with a tortured howl that equals any of his secular contemporaries.

Description: Personnel: Reba McEntire; Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greenberg (guitar, electric guitar); Jim Kimball (guitar); Jim Kimball (acoustic guitar); Tammy Rogers King (fiddle); Spady Brannan (bass guitar); Greg Morrow, Tommy Hardon, Tommy Harden (drums); Perry Coleman (background vocals); Bruce Bouton (steel guitar); Jimmy Nichols (piano, background vocals); Doug Sisemore (keyboards); Eric Darken (percussion); Jenifer Wrinkle (background vocals).Audio Mixer: Derek Bason.Liner Note Author: Reba McEntire.Recording information: Starstruck, Nashville, TN.Photographer: Ron Davis .With her own her own TV sitcom and a recording career that dates back to the late 1970s, Reba McEntire is undisputedly one of country music's most popular entertainers. Although there have been numerous collections of McEntire's singles, this two-disc set is the first to span more than 20 years of her hits. With the exception of two new recordings (the thoughtful "You're Gonna Be" and the energetic "Love Needs a Holiday," which appear at the beginning of the first and second discs, respectively), this compilation moves chronologically from 1982 to 2005, presenting 35 of Reba's finest moments. Every track benefits from her powerful voice and charming Oklahoma drawl, whether she's easing into the traditional "How Blue" or the pop-tinged "And Still." A well-selected release, #1'S is an excellent overview of Reba's impressive catalog, and is ideal for both newcomers and longtime fans.

Description: Signed by Capitol in 1960, Nancy Wilson enjoyed her first hit with Guess Who I Saw Today, a single that would prove to be the first of several major hits for the singer. By 1962 Nancy was rightfully regarded as one of the best female singers around, mixing Dinah Washington's jazz stylings with Sarah Vaughan's jazz tone, a mix that proved irresistible on Nancy's collaborative album with Cannonball Adderley. Later the same year Nancy released Hello Young Lovers, her fourth album for Capitol. With arrangements by George Shearing, the album continued her hot streak, hitting #49 on the Billboard chart and earning her a number of monikers, of which Fancy Miss Nancy would appear to be the most apt.

Your Price:$6.45
Description: Alabama: Randy Owen, Jeff Cook (vocals, guitar); Teddy Gentry (vocals, bass); Mark Herndon (drums).Additional personnel: Jack Eubanks, George (Leo) Jackson, Fred Newell, Mark Casstevens, David Hanner, Dale Sellers (guitar); Bruce Watkins (banjo); William Rainsford, Rodger Morris (keyboards); Walter David Smith, Larry Paxton (bass); Hayward Bishop, David Humphreys, Jerry Kroon (drums).Engineers: Gene Rice, Harold Shedd, Paul Goldberg.Recorded at Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee.Recorded when Alabama was in its prime, MOUNTAIN MUSIC combines pop rock with country in a very distinctive, always catchy manner. Comprising a variety of tunes ranging from slick rockers to soft, lush ballads, MOUNTAIN MUSIC creates a nice contrast and engages the listener from the very first note to the last. Some of the guitar rock tunes include a meritorious version of John Fogerty's "Green River," and Alabama's own "Never Be One."However, the most poignant songs on MOUNTAIN MUSIC are the slow dances. Songs such as "You Turn Me On," and "Close Enough To Be Perfect" are strong country ballads perfect for cuddling up with a loved one. While the production on this album is very much of its time, the music itself stands up well to contemporary scrutiny.

Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens' ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion after one more album. In the meantime, Izitso produced a final Top 40 hit in "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard" and a singles-chart entry in the instrumental "Was Dog a Doughnut." As a result, Stevens returned to the Top Ten LPs list with a ninth straight gold album, his last. ~ William Ruhlmann

Your Price:$6.50
Description: Personnel: Chuck Berry, Keith Richards (guitars), Bobby Keys (saxophones), Johnnie Johnson (pianos), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Joey Spampinato (bass), Steve Jordan (drums), Ingrid Berry (background vocals).Recorded at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri on October 16, 1986.All songs written by Chuck Berry.Personnel: Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray (vocals, guitar); Etta James, Julian Lennon , Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Keith Richards (guitar). This is the soundtrack to a documentary film chronicling a concert held to celebrate Chuck Berry's 60th birthday. The band was led by Keith Richards and featured Berry's regular pianist, Johnnie Johnson, Richards' regular pianist, Chuck Leavell, Rolling Stones sax player Bobby Keys, bassist Joey Spampinato from NRBQ, and drummer Steve Jordan from Richards' solo band. The guests included Robert Cray, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Clapton, Julian Lennon, and Etta James. Berry was ragged-voiced but enthusiastic, the band had spirit, and the guests, even if they were sometimes unlikely, were sincere. The best way to hear Berry's music is to obtain the original recordings, of course, but as a souvenir of the Taylor Hackford film, this is an enjoyable romp through the catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann

The nine-piece masked band has returned with another platter of bile-spitting, hate-filled rage rock, certain to please fans of their self-titled 1999 debut. Despite the debut instantly making the band a promising metal contender (going platinum with absolutely no radio or MTV play), the intensity level hasn't dipped in the slightest on their second platter. Producer Ross Robinson is once again back on board, and IOWA delivers from beginning to end, as evidenced by such angst-filled, explosive tracks as "People = Shit," "The Heretic Anthem," and "Left Behind," to name but a few. IOWA is surely destined to be the album that catapults Slipknot to the top of the heavy metal heap. It serves as the perfect soundtrack for disaffected teenage metalheads the world over.

R.L. Burnside - Well Well Well
R.L. Burnside - Well Well Well
Your Price:$15.99
Description: Personnel includes: R. L. Burnside (vocals, guitar); Curtis Salgado (harmonica, background vocals); Calvin Jackson (drums).Recorded between 1986 and 1993. Includes liner notes by Jon Morris.Personnel: R.L. Burnside (vocals, guitar); Joni Morris (harmonica); Calvin Jackson (drums).Recording information: Athens, Greece (1986-1993); Gieterveen, The Netherlands (1986-1993); Het Paard, The Hague, The Netherlands (1986-1993); Ninth Ward Shotgun House, New Orleans, LA (1986-1993); Queen Street Playhouse, Charleston, SC (1986-1993).Arranger: R.L. Burnside. At first glance, this archival collection may appear to be too much of a hodge-podge. The recording dates range from 1986 to 1993; the locations range from a large theater in The Hague to a shotgun house in New Orleans; the lineups range from solo performances by Burnside to trio sessions with Jon Morris and Calvin Jackson; and the songs range from Burnside originals to blues classics by Muddy Waters ("Can't Be Satisfied"), John Lee Hooker ("Boogie Chillen'"), Big Joe Williams ("Mellow Peaches"), and others. However, the material coheres fairly well despite the scattershot nature of this collection. Burnside's performances are relatively consistent in both quality and musical style; he sticks to straightforward blues without the hip-hop and techno elements found on some of his other recordings, and his dry sense of humor helps unify the music with the spoken word portions of the album. The one-minute interview segment (in which Burnside discusses fishing and guitar playing) and 93-second in-concert monologue (about a girl who saw him eat grass from her front lawn) fit comfortably next to the songs, and the bull-session atmosphere of "Bad Luck Money Rap" (in which he tells Morris and vocalist/harp player Curtis Salgado about certain things that make him so mad he could eat fried chicken) is compatible with the relaxed, informal feel of the album, although at six minutes and 30 seconds it's too long of an intermission from the music. Some of the album's highlights include a powerful rendition of "Staggolee" with explicit lyrics that ensure that this traditional tune is "not suitable for airplay"; a short but sweet performance of the Lightnin' Hopkins song "Mojo Hand"; a live version of Burnside's own ".44 Pistol" recorded at the Queen Street Playhouse in Charleston, SC; a recording of his signature song, "Goin' Down South," with Morris and Jackson at a shed in Gieterveen, Holland; and a performance of "How Many More Years" in Athens, Greece, that proves that Burnside really can sing and play the blues, even though his vocals don't have the overpowering intensity of Howlin' Wolf's original version. ~ Todd Kristel

Adele - 25
Adele - 25
Your Price:$12.46
Description: Recording information: Air Studios, London; British Grove Studios, London; Dean Street Studios, London; Glenwood Recording Studios, Los Angeles; Metropolis Studios, London; Sam's Studio, London; Smecky Studio, Prague; The Church Studios, London; West Point Studios, London.Photographer: Alexandra Waespi.Autobiography is baked into Adele's art. She called her first album 19, naming it after her age at the time of writing, and like a musical, millennial Michael Apted, each successive album represented another chapter in her life's story. Fueled by heartbreak, her roiling 2011 record 21 ushered in her adulthood and superstardom, two acts that were instrumental in the creation of 25, the 2015 album purportedly documenting her mid-twenties. Between 21 and 25, Adele fell in love and started a family, an event that would surely be grist for a memoirist's mill if Adele was as confessional a singer/songwriter as she appears, but she is not. Like 21 before it, the love that flows through 25 is either curdled or lost, love that can no longer replenish or nourish. It is certainly not the kind of love that would arise from a satisfying, stable relationship, but it is indeed the kind of love that is recognizable from 21: love that hurts, not heals. While her themes may remain the same, Adele isn't the same singer as she was in 2011, nor is 25 a carbon copy of 21. Success has given her the confidence to abandon any lingering Amy Winehouse influence, taking along with it any sense of swing or sass. Max Martin and Shellback give "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" a subdued, spliced electronic pulse, just enough of a rhythm to distinguish the track from the rest of the record. But it and the cinematically surging "Water Under the Bridge" -- a song begging to be played over the closing credits of an inspirational biopic -- wither when compared to the wallop of "Rolling in the Deep." This stateliness is intentional, forcing attention with both the full force gale that is Adele's voice and, not so coincidentally, her placid good taste. It isn't so much that Adele doesn't take risks -- she's hip enough to enlist Haim/Charli XCX's producer to helm "When We Were Young," a song co-written with hotly tipped sensitive soul Tobias Jesso, Jr., and she brings in Danger Mouse to help orchestrate the neo-gospel of "River Lea." But she's so devoted to ballads, ballads determined to convey grace and strength in the face of loss that she winds up residing in a middle of the road, which makes her seem much older than the quarter century of the title. Adele doesn't help matters by dwelling on the passage of time, repeatedly returning to the idea that she ain't a kid anymore. It's a sentiment that suits a singer many years past 25 yet also suggests a bit of savvy on her part: these are songs that are meant to be heard -- and sung -- for years after the album's initial release, gathering resonance with the passage of time. Fittingly, 25 also plays better over the long haul, its march of slow songs steadily revealing subtle emotional or musical distinctions. Make no mistake, all 11 songs are of a piece -- they're shaded by melancholy, gaining most of their power through performance -- but that cohesive sound only accentuates how Adele has definitively claimed this arena of dignified heartbreak as her own. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

Description: Includes 5 bonus tracks.Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Sam Brown (vocals); Dhani Harrison (acosutic guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, background vocals); Badfinger (guitar, percussion); Dave Mason, Eric Clapton (guitar); Pete Drake (pedal steel guitar); Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone); Jim Price (trumpet); Billy Preston, Gary Wright, Bobby Whitlock, Gary Brooker (keyboards); Carl Radle, Klaus Voorman (bass); Ringo Starr, Alan White, Jim Gordon (drums, percussion); Ray Cooper, Mal Evans (tambourine).Engineers: Ken Scott, Philip McDonald, Ken Scott.Includes liner notes by George Harrison.Digitally remastered by Jon Astley.Without a doubt, Harrison's first solo recording, originally issued as a triple album, is his best. Drawing on his backlog of unused compositions from the late Beatles era, George crafted material that managed the rare feat of conveying spiritual mysticism without sacrificing his gifts for melody and grand, sweeping arrangements. Enhanced by Phil Spector's lush orchestral production and Harrison's own superb slide guitar, nearly every song is excellent: "Awaiting on You All," "Beware of Darkness," the Dylan collaboration "I'd Have You Anytime," "Isn't It a Pity," and the hit singles "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life" are just a few of the highlights. A very moving work, with a very significant flaw: the jams that comprise the final third of the album are entirely dispensable, and have probably only been played once or twice by most of the listeners who own this record. Those same jams, however, played by Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock, and Jim Gordon (all of whom had just come off of touring as part of Delaney & Bonnie's band), proved to be of immense musical importance, precipitating the formation of Derek & the Dominos. Thus, they weren't a total dead end, and may actually be much more to the liking of the latter band's fans. ~ Richie Unterberger & Bruce Eder

As Gang Of Four's ENTERTAINMENT! was to socialism, TUBTHUMPER is to anarchism. But this isn't the hippie anarcho-ruralism of Gong or sludgy Rage Against The Machine pontification--Chumbawamba knows their theory. TUBTHUMPER mixes textbook anarchism with current musical trends, from jungle and trip-hop to plunderphonics and Britpop.Throughout this mix of styles, the message is heady. Whether it is union corruption in Liverpool's dockworkers strike ("One-By-One") or anti-Catholic proselytization ("Mary, Mary"), the message is less bomb-throwing Bakunin vitriol and bilious Goldman tirades, and more academic and syncretic. As such, TUBTHUMPER will probably appeal more to the anorak-wearing student type than to members of Class War. Chumbawamba want to use music as a weapon in the war against Capitalism and could become Greil Marcus's next darlings, but if music is just another fetishized commodity in a spectacular society, it will be a while before TUBTHUMPER foments another May '68. Until it does, though, be content to sit back and listen to some enjoyably catchy and thought-provoking tunes.

    Tycho - Awake
    Tycho - Awake
    Your Price:$9.67
Description: Personnel: Scott Hansen (guitar, keyboards, drums); Zac Brown (guitar); Rory O'Connor (drums).Audio Mixer: Scott Hansen .Recording information: Decibelle Recording Studios; STS-9 Studio. The variations within Tycho's music have always been subtle, hovering between ambient introspection and more active synth pop and post-rock elements. On Awake, Scott Hansen breaks the mold a bit, crafting a set of songs with more prominent peaks and valleys than his previous work. He makes this shift known with the album's first two songs, both of which shake off the insular feel of his previous album, Dive, in favor of streamlined guitar pop with most of its rough edges and raw emotions smoothed away. "Awake" foreshadows how large a role chugging and chiming guitars play on the rest of the album; Tycho's signature squiggly analog synths don't surface until the track is almost over. Meanwhile, the lush "Montana" is the closest Hansen has come to delivering an anthem. Later, "Apogee"'s prickly electronics and distorted beats underscore that Awake is something of a departure even in its more familiar-sounding moments. Whenever it feels like Hansen has sacrificed too much of the haunting, affecting qualities of Dive and Past Is Prologue for something more superficially energetic -- such as "See"'s laser-guided climax -- he tempers Awake with more reflective pieces. "Dye" will reassure longtime fans that he hasn't lost his flair for breezily melancholic atmospheres, while "L"'s prominent beat doesn't detract from the song's gentle liftoff or the way its sparkling keyboards and guitars melt into each other. Despite Awake's flirtations with change, like other Tycho albums it's best appreciated as a whole; moving from bright to serene to brooding, it offers a sunset of moods. As it drifts off in a haze with "Plains"' winsome haze, it feels like the musical equivalent of tasteful graphic design; even as Tycho adds more depth and variety to his sound, his music's main success is giving listeners an attractive backdrop for whatever they might be doing. ~ Heather Phares

    Keith Urban - Ripcord
    Keith Urban - Ripcord
    Your Price:$14.67
Description: As something of an outsider to Nashville, Keith Urban has the latitude to experiment, an opportunity he seizes with 2016's Ripcord. The album's very title suggests he's diving into the great wide open and he makes no attempt to disguise the record's heavy hip-hop and electronic influence. "Sun Don't Let Me Down," a collaboration with Nile Rodgers featuring a verse by Latin superstar rapper Pitbull, is merely the culmination of all these inclinations, a move Urban hinted at with the rolling loop propelling the album's lead single, "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16." Given how contemporary country has shifted in the years following 2013's Fuse -- the party-hearty swagger of bro country is in decline, replaced by the flexible R&B rhythms of the likes of Sam Hunt and Brett Eldredge -- Urban's shift is not only adventurous, but commercially savvy. It also suits his style, which always threads subtly modern, mass appeal moves into a country pop that's never beholden to Music City conventions. Despite the presence of such sturdily constructed songs as "Blue Ain't Your Color" -- a 12-bar slow dance that could've been a hit back in the '50s -- Ripcord relies on songs that push at the borders of modern country, often qualifying as pop by any other name. That's not true merely of "Sun Don't Let Me Down," whose Pitbull cameo may scare away listeners who knew Urban long before he starred on American Idol: "Gone Tomorrow (Here Today)" zooms along on a neon highway and "The Fighter," a duet with Carrie Underwood, feels like an updated spin on '80s Urban Cowboy. All throughout Ripcord, the electronic elements are at the forefront and foundation, but it's to Urban's credit that this never feels desperate or pandering: it's a smooth, logical progression that makes his music feel sleek and mature. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

    Hatebreed - Rise Of Brutality
    Hatebreed - Rise Of Brutality
    Your Price:$14.24
Description: Hatebreed: Jamey Jasta (vocals); Sean Martin (guitar); Chris Beattie (bass); Matt Byrne (drums).Recorded at Planet Z Studios, Hadley, Massachusetts.CD contains 1 bonus track. There comes a time in young music fans' lives when they put aside the flashy, lightweight records of their teens, come face to face with humanity's harsh realities, and pick new tunes appropriate to a more serious and realistic worldview. Anyone who feels that it's time to relegate such albums to the box under the bed would do well to start a new life-phase with a little Hatebreed. On THE RISE OF BRUTALITY, the band lives up to the record's title, delivering a disc of astonishing purity and extreme volume. There is no rapping. There are no turntables and no power ballads. In fact, there is nothing here but a mind-numbing, ferocious, and totally unrelenting onslaught of drums, guitar, bass, and hoarse-voiced shouting. Unlike similar-sounding bands, though, Hatebreed never sounds less than totally impassioned, making for a uniformly thrilling listening experience. Taking its cues from socially aware 1980s hardcore like Sick of It All and Agnostic Front, the band combines positive messages with enough hyper-speed double-bass drumming and stop-on-a-dime rhythmic shifts to keep even the most sugar and testosterone-addled youth moshing until they reach retirement age.

Expectations ran high for the band's sophomore release, and 2007's IT WON'T BE SOON BEFORE LONG delivers. Five years in the making, the album has the sound of a pop album that is well written and performed, painstakingly put together, and slickly and smartly produced.Maroon 5 have come a long way from the grunge-rock flavor of their tenure as Kara's Flower's (the band's first incarnation). The group still rocks when they want to, but IT WON'T BE SOON finds M5 emphasizing smoother, melodic fare with an R&B twist. Traces of Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, Prince, and other mainstream soul-pop icons can be heard in the mix, but Maroon 5 gives their sound a distinctive stamp, melding electronic influences, hip-hop, balladry, rock, and keen pop sensibilities. The overall vibe is stylish and sexy, and the top-shelf production glitters, but it's the songwriting that takes center stage (just check the album's first single "Makes Me Wonder").

HELL FREEZES OVER was nominated for Best Pop Album. The album that accompanied the Eagles' much-hyped 1994 reunion highlights everything that made the group popular titans and critical targets through the '70s. Consisting of four new studio tracks and 11 live tracks from an MTV special, Hell Freezes Over is impeccably crafted -- and a little lifeless. The new tracks include "Get Over It," a mean-spirited rocker that takes aim at the cult of victimhood, and three decent love songs. The live stuff includes most of the hits, from "Take It Easy" to "I Can't Tell You Why," showcasing both the inspired melodicism and the austere professionalism that marked the group's original work. ~ Eddie Huffman

    Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

Description: Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, background vocals); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, background vocals).Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano).Recorded at Headley Grave, Hampshire, England; Olympic Studios and Islan, London, England; Stargroves, England between 1972 & 1974.Audio Remasterer: Jimmy Page.Recording information: Olympic Studios, No. 1, London, UK; The Rolling Stones Mobile Unit, Headley Grange, UK.Illustrator: Dave Heffernan.Photographers: Elliott Erwitt; Ian Dickson; Ray Harper; Terry O'Neill ; Neal Preston; Pennie Smith; Michael Brennan ; B.P. Fallen.Led Zeppelin returned from a nearly two-year hiatus in 1975 with the double-album Physical Graffiti, their most sprawling and ambitious work. Where Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy integrated influences on each song, the majority of the tracks on Physical Graffiti are individual stylistic workouts. The highlights are when Zeppelin incorporate influences and stretch out into new stylistic territory, most notably on the tense, Eastern-influenced "Kashmir." "Trampled Underfoot," with John Paul Jones' galloping keyboard, is their best funk-metal workout, while "Houses of the Holy" is their best attempt at pop, and "Down by the Seaside" is the closest they've come to country. Even the heavier blues -- the 11-minute "In My Time of Dying," the tightly wound "Custard Pie," and the monstrous epic "The Rover" -- are louder and more extended and textured than their previous work. Also, all of the heavy songs are on the first record, leaving the rest of the album to explore more adventurous territory, whether it's acoustic tracks or grandiose but quiet epics like the affecting "Ten Years Gone." The second half of Physical Graffiti feels like the group is cleaning the vaults out, issuing every little scrap of music they set to tape in the past few years. That means that the album is filled with songs that aren't quite filler, but don't quite match the peaks of the album, either. Still, even these songs have their merits -- "Sick Again" is the meanest, most decadent rocker they ever recorded, and the folky acoustic rock & roll of "Boogie with Stu" and "Black Country Woman" may be tossed off, but they have a relaxed, off-hand charm that Zeppelin never matched. It takes a while to sort out all of the music on the album, but Physical Graffiti captures the whole experience of Led Zeppelin at the top of their game better than any of their other albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
